Board of Water and Power Commissioners to Consider Calling for
Implementation of Shortage Year Water Rates

Urgent and Time-Sensitive Matter

Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14, 2009, the Los Angeles Board of Water and Power Commissioners will hold a "Special Meeting" of the Board in order to consider a resolution affirming that the water supply for the City of Los Angeles is insufficient to meet the City's normal demand, the degree of shortage is 15%, and that the charges and provisions of Shortage Year Rates be applied effective May 1, 2009.  If approved, this matter will be forwarded to the City Council and Mayor for consideration.

The special meeting of the Board will be held Tuesday April 14th at 8:30 AM at the Grace E. Simmons Lodge, 1025 Elysian Park Drive, Los Angeles 90012.  It will take place just prior to a previously scheduled Board workshop regarding the LADWP's strategic planning effort.

Please note location of this meeting is at Grace E. Simmons Lodge.  The entrance to the lodge is denoted by a large sign on Elysian Park Drive.  There is ample free parking available for attendees.

Neighborhood Council members are invited to attend and testify regarding this urgent and time-sensitive matter.

The LADWP will also hold another informational workshop about our water supply conditions and achieving mandatory water conservation through shortage year rates this Saturday, April 18th at 10AM.  An invitation to this workshop will be sent shortly.

MORE ABOUT ACHIEVING MANDATORY WATER CONSERVATION THROUGH SHORTAGE YEAR RATES:
Shortage year rates seek to achieve 15% water savings citywide and in all customer sectors -- single-family, multi-family, commercial, industrial and governmental.  Under shortage year rates, the current Tier 1 water allocation, which is the standard allocation every customer gets per billing cycle, will be reduced by 15%.  A customer’s allocation is based on number of family members, heat zone and lot size.  Customers whose water use remains within their reduced allocation will actually see their bills go down.  Customers who usually stay within their regular allocation and do not reduce their water use by 15% will pay a premium rate for each gallon they use beyond their new reduced water allocation.  Customers who today exceed their regular allocation and pay Tier 2 rates routinely, and do not significantly cut their water use under shortage year rates, will see their water bills increase substantially.
